Breaking the Overnight Success Myth

Book · Autobiography · Cause-Driven Publishing

Designing A Life Story

When Saša Popović, founder of Vega IT, decided to write a book „Život preduzetnika“ (“Breaking the Overnight Success Myth“), we were lucky to be invited into it to weave his voice into the pages exactly as he meant it.

What we did: Cover design, full interior layout, branded excerpt, launch motion and social content, and the complete suite of print and event materials for the book’s release, delivered in both Serbian and English, in print and digital editions.

What we achieved: No conversion metric captures this one properly, and that’s fine by us. We got to put our hands on something that funds scholarships for young people in Serbia and carries a story we genuinely believe in. That’s a different kind of win, and we’ll take it.

The Author, and the Story

Vega IT is one of Serbia’s leading software development companies, based in Novi Sad, building digital products for clients across the globe.

Its founder, Saša Popović, started his career laying bricks before building one of the country’s most successful IT companies from the ground up.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been on this path for years, „Život preduzetnika“ (“Breaking the Overnight Success Myth“) reads like a wealth of wisdom: stories of overcoming obstacles that inspire you to embrace whatever’s ahead. It speaks directly to a reader’s ambitions, encouraging them to turn hurdles into opportunities and pursue their goals with a bit more confidence.

“Breaking the Overnight Success Myth” is Saša’s account of that journey, the early struggles, the partnerships that didn’t work out, the decisions that did, and the discipline it took to get from one to the other. The battles show up in nearly every chapter: the grit it took to steer through the turbulent early years, and the resilience and inventive thinking that carried him through them.

And there’s more to it: every copy sold funds a scholarship through the Vega IT Foundation, supporting young people in Serbia on their own path toward education and opportunity.

The Reality

Saša’s story, from bricklaying to building one of Serbia’s most successful IT companies, isn’t one that needs dressing up. The risk was at our end. Could the design carry something this personal without flattening it into template? This wasn’t a product launch.

It was someone’s life, and every page had to feel like it.

The Shift

Most of what we design is built around a metric: conversion, adoption, retention. A pricing page or a product interface succeeds when someone takes an action. That’s the work, and most days, it’s the right way to measure it.

A book asks a different question. Saša was writing something for someone to sit with; maybe a young engineer in Serbia, years from now, looking for proof that the path is possible and that the future can be bright.

We recalibrated our design framework for this project. Instead of designing for rapid micro-actions, we designed for sustained immersion.

Every typographic choice, vertical grid alignment, and layout constraint was made to serve a single objective: making sure his message reached the page exactly as he meant it, with nothing standing between the reader and the author.

The Build

Editorial & Print

Cover design, full interior layout, and page-by-page formatting across 300 pages built to hold a personal narrative.

The cover is not just visually appealing; it supports the transformational journey of entrepreneurship. Each page is thoughtfully formatted, making it easy for readers to engage with Saša’s story.

The book was delivered in both Serbian and English editions. The e-version was designed as a separate process, independent from the print layout, adapted to its own format and reading context.

Brand Extension

A branded excerpt, designed to stand on its own as a teaser across Vega IT and Saša’s channels: same visual language, different format. Every visual element was considered carefully, built to bear the same weight as the book itself.

Motion & Social

Launch visuals and video content built for Vega IT’s and Saša’s own channels, timed around the book’s release.

On the Ground

Print-ready files prepared and optimised for the printer, plus the full set of physical materials for the launch itself: standees, roll-up, drink menu, parking map. The logistics that make a launch night actually run.

Impact

Our job was to make sure the design did its part: hold a personal story together across 300 pages, let it read the way Saša intended, and give a cause worth supporting a look that matched its weight. Every copy sold funds a scholarship through the Vega IT Foundation for young people in Serbia.

It found its audience. Marija Desivojević, Vice President at Delta Holding, called it a book you “don’t put down until the last page.” Miša Lukić, CEO of New Strategy, described it as “a story of human spirit and entrepreneurial courage.” And Nebojša Matić, CEO of Mikroelektronika and a self-described film buff, said reading it gave him the same excitement he felt watching The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Reality Check

The hardest part of this project wasn’t a design decision but resisting the trap of over-designing it. A story this honest doesn’t need decoration. It needs the design to stay out of the way and let the truth do the heavy lifting.

Got a project that doesn't fit the usual brief: philanthropic, personal, out of the box? We'd love to hear about it.
